But with Classic Words, nearly every rack I draw has a favorable consonant-vowel ratio and gives me a decent play. When tile selection is truly random, you’re going to end up with the occasional garbage hand like GKMTTUW or AIIIOOP. The app hands out 7-letter words like candy, and I’m almost never stuck with a truly bad rack. Second, and much more noticeable, the drawing of tiles is anything but random. First, as someone who would like to play in tournaments someday, I’d much prefer that they used the current, official tournament word list rather than dictionaries “inspired by” outdated official lists. There are two main downsides to the app, though neither is bad enough to drive me away. Clean interface, decent dictionaries (I’ll say more about that in a moment), quick AI response, and no game-pausing ads or silly “rewards.” Just good ol’ Scrabble. Then my son found Classic Words, which is the closest thing yet to an authentic Scrabble experience. Classic Words is challenging and fun to play, and as someone with a degree in English, I can recommended this app to anyone who likes playing word games.Īfter the official Scrabble app was discontinued and replaced by a nightmarish ADHD playground, I had to settle for playing on a handful of Scrabble-like word game apps, each of which left a lot to be desired. The app keeps track of a few statistics for you, such as win/loss and best word. With other word games, the computer makes words most people have never heard of, or plays very slowly, which is no fun to play against.Īnother great feature is the ability to easily shuffle your tray of letters with the touch of one button, or you can rearrange the tiles manually. I also like how the computer player does not make incredibly obscure words, at least not at the Normal level, and makes its words quickly, so you don’t get bored waiting for the computer’s turn. Another feature I like is the ability to highlight a word that been played and see the definition. With this app, unobtrusive ad banners appear near the top, and ads only play after each game ends. With other similar free word games, ads play after every few turns. I enjoy Classic Words for many reasons, but mostly because the turns are NOT interrupted by ads. Only your tactics and creativity can make the difference. Letters and blanks are always picked randomly, and the computer's artificial intelligence does not have more information than you do. Thanks to the fast reactivity of the artificial intelligence (AI) and to the official word lists, Classic Words can be used by the traditional word game enthusiasts to play quick training matches and learn new words from the computer's moves. It is also an educational game that will allow kids (and adults :-) ) to improve their spelling and vocabulary. This game is a great time killer for all fans of board games and strategy games. Oh, on my daughters bass I did have to barely tweak the intonation on one string, but the other three were perfect. Just make sure it's got the EMG type pickups. So, for the money, I'd forget the hype and go to Rondo and pick up one of their Fender clones. I compared it against my Fender Jazz hybrid bass made from this and that parts and it sounded nearly as good at that one too. I plugged in my 1963 Fender P-bass and that little Chinese bass was right there with it. (it came with round wounds on it which helped). So, I thought, well how good could it sound? So I fired up Reaper, plugged it in to my preamp and it REALLY pissed me off. It was beautifully made, the action was perfect, the neck true, very good machines, and came with low impedance EMG designed pickups. I wanted an inexpensive bass for my daughter and I bought her an AXL or a Johnson (I forget which) but it was only $110 including shipping!!! Man, when that thing got her I was in shock. I can personally second the motion and vote for going to the Rondo Music online store. The trick, I found, was to not think in terms of actual octaves, but instead frequency ranges, plus arangment, part, etc. But It can be done with a reg gtr, within limits. I've since redone most of those using an actual bass and, yeah, it does sound better. You just have "think bass" when you're doing it. the articulations are much better, and that alone helps make it work. Importantly, I found it much easier to get the kind of bass parts that I like by using a guitar than by using a keyboard. The fact that regular guitar strings have a smaller vibrating mass than bass strings is no small factor - I think that's why some kinds of sounds seem beyond this approach. The issues are pretty much the same, only you approach them from a different angle. In both cases the sound needs to be shaped and made to work with the mix. This typically involves rolling off some low end, compressing, maybe shaping the mids to bring out the upper harmonics, and so on.ĭoing bass with a regular guitar, which is an octave higher, the issues are somewhat mirror image: You need to increase the low end, without overdoing it the mids are already more present, but you don't want them to sound too thin or bright and "guitar"-like. With real bass, or even with sampled bass, one of the issues is how to process/shape/sculpt it so that it fits in the mix. There are certain kinds of bass sounds that cannot be gotten this way. I've tried transposing down an octave, but I don't find it as effective. I then did additional processing to the recorded sound in my DAW (Sonar at the time.) I used EQ and additional compression, amp and/or tape sims, and so on to further sculpt the sound. This got me closer to a basic (and relatively "unprocessed", so to speak) bass sound. I then tweaked various settings in the POD, including the EQ and compressor modules, to deepen and round out the sound. My guitar has an additional 6db boost knob at (I think) 650Hz that I use to fatten it up. I used the neck pickups with an appropriate tone control setting and sent that into a bass-boosting patch in my POD X3. Note that I did NOT shift down an active at any point. The results varied but it could be surprisingly effective. The full version includes an extra couple of sliders that control the fifths across two octaves.Īs a result, the effect can be pushed even further with the full version of Graillon, although the freeware edition can still lead to some interesting sounding results.I used to use my guitar for bass before I bought an actual one. The CPU hit is around 1% on a quad core processor, which is an excellent result.Ĭompared to the full version of Graillon (priced at €29), the freeware edition features only a couple octave sliders in addition to the input/output gain, placebo, mix, and low cut controls. This makes the higher notes sound particularly disharmonic, somewhat similar to ring modulation. In order to reduce latency, Auburn Sounds have decided to use frequency shifting instead of pitch shifting. See also: Free Panagement Biaural Panner By Auburn Sounds! The result is an artificial and somewhat robotic-sounding version of the original voice, which can work really well for achieving certain types of effects. What’s particularly interesting is that only the vowels and voiced consonants are changed, whereas the rest of the signal is left unaffected, thus making the processed signal (especially speech) easier to understand. Graillon Free is an interesting voice processing tool that mixes frequency-shifted copies of the processed audio signal with itself. Auburn Sounds released Graillon Free, a freeware feature-limited edition of their Graillon voice octaver effect for PC and Mac-based digital audio workstations. While it may be one of only 4,009 GT Hawks sold in 1963 (and one of fewer than 1,000 with a supercharged V8), this grand tourer isn't desirable, so the previous owner had no issues turning it into a parts car. Why would anyone do such a thing to a classic that's still pretty solid? Well, it's quite common for vehicles like these to be parted out. Yup, it's the same engine that enabled the Avanti to reach over 170 mph (274 kph) and set 29 world speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1962. Known as the R2, it delivered 289 horsepower and 370 pound-feet (502 Nm) of torque when new. The grand tourer left the factory with the supercharged version of the company's 289-cubic-inch (4.7-liter) V8. And that's a shame because this GT Hawk is not a run-of-the-mill model. The mill was reportedly removed and sold in 2023. Unfortunately, this Studebaker no longer has its original V8 engine. And that's probably because it spent a lot of time indoors.īut there's bad news to share as well. Sure, the paint has seen better days, and there's rust on the lower body panels, but it's still surprisingly clean. But even though it sat for nearly five decades, the GT Hawk is still in one piece. Specifically, this Studebaker got its last inspection in 1978, meaning it hasn't been on the road for 46 years as of 2024. The 1963 version you see here is one of those GT Hawks that were parked and forgotten for too many years. It doesn't get as much love as the Golden Hawk or Avanti, and many examples are rotting away in barns and junkyards. And it's a classic we rarely see at classic car shows. For reference, Ford sold 233,789 Thunderbirds over the same period.Ĭome 2023, the GT Hawk is a Studebaker we rarely think about. The grand tourer moved only 13,881 units on US soil until it was discontinued at the end of the 1964 model year. The Hawk remained a V8-exclusive affair, hitting showrooms with 210 to 335 horsepower, depending on model year and drivetrain configuration.īut despite being a stylish and powerful rig, the GT Hawk failed to steal customers from Ford or GM. While the radiator grille was inspired by Mercedes-Benz vehicles (which were distributed by Studebaker in the US at the time), the roofline was similar to American personal luxury cars like the Ford Thunderbird. Studebaker's final effort in this niche, the GT Hawk combined both European and American styling cues. 1960 brought just one Hawk model into showrooms, replaced by the Gran Turismo Hawk in 1962. The Golden Hawk was discontinued in 1958, while the Silver Hawk went into the history books one year later. The latter was the only version that remained in production for 1957, joined by the Silver Hawk. The lineup also included a mid-priced Power Hawk with an optional V8, a fancier Sky Hawk version, and the range-topping Golden Hawk, which combined luxury features with a 275-horsepower V8. No fewer than four different models emerged that year, starting with the base Flight Hawk. In an effort to stay afloat, Studebaker joined the grand tourer market with the Hawk series in 1956. By 1956, the Studebaker-Packard Corporation was nearly bankrupt. The union did little to help save the company. The third group of font tools focuses on web fonts: Browser extensions and bookmarks display the correct font if they encounter it as text that can be clicked and selected. On the other hand, such tools can be used when you already have an idea of what your font should look like. Because the more often you select “not sure”, the less probable a match becomes. This works best when you have an entire text in the elusive font which includes a lot of different letters. But there are also programs that help you with this task: Portals such as and ask questions about the appearance of the different font glyphs – letters, punctuation marks and other symbols and subsequently show potential matches. Identifying fonts by appearance is much harder. Such tools extract glyphs from the image material which are then recognized automatically or manually. If you have an image of the font such as a screenshot or a photo, you can use for example “Font Matcherator” by Fontspring to analyse the glyphs. If the player is KO'd, the minion will simply wander off back to wherever it rests until the player calls upon it again. While minions do not generate any enmity, neither will they participate in battle. Once the player learns the summoning action, it will never be lost and it can be used by all of the player's classes or jobs. To obtain the summoning action for a minion, the player must use the corresponding item for it, which can be acquired through diverse means such as quests, crafting, and FATEs. Only one minion can be summoned at a time. The only exceptions being when the player is on duty or has a summoned companion. Minions can be summoned or dismissed at any time, without having to wait for any recast timer. |
